Finding the right supplement for your horse should begin with a clear question: what kind of nutritional support does the horse actually need?

Age, workload, forage quality, turnout, travel and existing health concerns can all influence that decision. A horse needing everyday digestive support will not necessarily benefit from the same product as one in intensive training or an older horse requiring additional mobility support.

Flurrybridge Vet Shop stocks a carefully selected range of Hestevard complementary feeds, including products for digestion, joints, tendons, muscle development and antioxidant support.

Here is what each Hestevard product in our range is designed to provide.

Hestevard Profix

Profix Advanced is a powdered complementary feed intended to support a healthy digestive and gastric system.

Its formulation includes fructo-oligosaccharides and yeast, alongside threonine and vitamins including C, E and several B vitamins. Hestevard describes it as a symbiotic formulation combining prebiotic and yeast-based nutritional support.

Profix may be considered for horses that need:

  • everyday digestive support

  • additional nutritional support following changes in routine

  • help maintaining normal digestion and body condition

  • longer-term support as part of a balanced feeding programme

It is available in different pack sizes and is fed as a powder mixed into the horse’s normal ration.

Profix is not a treatment for colic, ulcers, diarrhoea or another digestive disease. Recurrent colic, weight loss, reduced appetite, loose droppings or significant behavioural changes should be investigated by a veterinary surgeon.

Profix +BIND is a more concentrated Professional Range digestive product formulated to help maintain normal digestive function and stool consistency.

Hestevard describes it as a multi-action binder blend providing nutritional support for digestion and the use of nutrients from feed. It contains ingredients including yeast, vitamins, fenugreek and threonine.

It may be selected for horses requiring more targeted digestive support, including during periods when normal droppings or digestive balance have been disrupted.

Because Profix +BIND belongs to Hestevard’s Professional Range, it should be used according to the product directions and any veterinary advice supplied.

The term “binder” does not mean that the product treats poisoning, infection or serious diarrhoea. Veterinary advice is important where loose droppings are persistent, severe, accompanied by fever or associated with weight loss, dehydration or abdominal discomfort.

Durizanol is a concentrated liquid complementary feed designed to provide nutritional support for muscle development and condition.

Its principal ingredient is concentrated rice bran oil containing gamma oryzanol. Hestevard markets it as a 28-day muscle-support formulation aimed at horses undergoing training or requiring support for lean muscle development and overall appearance.

Durizanol may be of interest for:

  • horses in structured training

  • animals being prepared for competition or showing

  • horses requiring additional support for muscle condition

  • horses returning gradually to work

A supplement cannot build muscle without appropriate exercise, sufficient dietary protein and an adequately balanced ration.

Unexpected muscle loss, weakness, stiffness, poor performance or difficulty maintaining condition should be discussed with a veterinary surgeon or suitably qualified equine nutritionist.

BozMerix is a Professional Range complementary feed intended to provide advanced nutritional support for joint and muscular comfort.

Its formulation includes Boswellia serrata, microencapsulated curcumin, avocado and soya unsaponifiables, commonly referred to as ASU, and omega-derived ingredients containing EPA and DHA. Hestevard describes it as supporting the horse’s natural systems involved in inflammatory control and helping maintain orthopaedic comfort.

BozMerix may be considered for:

  • older horses

  • horses in intensive training

  • horses undergoing carefully managed rehabilitation

  • competition horses facing increased physical demands

  • animals requiring targeted joint and muscular support

BozMerix is a complementary feed and not an anti-inflammatory medicine. It should not be presented as treating arthritis, lameness, injury or pain.

Any new or worsening lameness, heat, swelling, reluctance to move or change in performance requires proper veterinary assessment.

BozMerix Balancer Maintenance Diet combines a daily feed balancer with a maintenance quantity of BozMerix.

It is a pelleted product based on ingredients including soya hulls, linseed expeller and black oats. Hestevard states that it provides more than 30 vitamins, minerals, trace elements and amino acids, together with prebiotics and probiotics. It also contains a maintenance amount of BozMerix for ongoing nutritional joint support.

The balancer may suit owners who want to combine:

  • everyday vitamins and minerals

  • a low-sugar and low-starch feed option

  • digestive nutritional support

  • maintenance-level joint support

BozMerix Balancer is different from professional-strength BozMerix. The balancer is designed as an everyday maintenance feed, while BozMerix provides more concentrated, targeted supplementation.

Care should be taken when combining the balancer with other fortified feeds, multivitamins or mineral supplements. Feeding several products containing overlapping nutrients may result in unnecessary duplication.

HesteFlex is a concentrated complementary feed designed to support the nutritional maintenance of joints and tendons.

The professional powdered formulation contains ingredients including glucosamine, chondroitin, Boswellia, MSM, vitamin C and natural vitamin E. Hestevard describes it as a triple-action formulation for joint, cartilage and tendon support.

HesteFlex may be considered for:

  • horses of different ages and disciplines

  • horses in regular work

  • older animals requiring additional joint maintenance

  • horses experiencing repeated demands on joints and tendons

  • owners seeking everyday cartilage and tendon support

Flurrybridge customers should check whether the product listed is the powdered Professional Range HesteFlex or another HesteFlex formulation, as Hestevard also produces liquid and collagen-containing versions.

No joint supplement should be used to keep a sore or lame horse in work without veterinary investigation.

Dura-E is a complementary feed containing a high concentration of vitamin E.

Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant and has important roles in normal muscle function, immune function and protection of cells from oxidative stress. Hestevard’s standard Dura-E formulation also contains sources of readily available dietary energy.

Dura-E may be considered for:

  • horses in demanding work

  • animals with increased muscular demands

  • horses whose diets may provide limited vitamin E

  • breeding animals where nutritional vitamin E support is appropriate

  • horses receiving conserved forage with little or no fresh grass

Vitamin E supplementation should be assessed in the context of the complete diet.

Horses consuming good-quality fresh pasture may already receive meaningful dietary vitamin E, while horses with limited grazing or those fed older conserved forage may have different needs.

Muscle stiffness, weakness, trembling, poor performance or suspected nutritional deficiency requires professional investigation. A supplement should not be used to diagnose or treat a vitamin E deficiency without veterinary or nutritional guidance.

What is the difference between BozMerix and HesteFlex?

Both products provide nutritional support for the musculoskeletal system, but they are formulated differently.

BozMerix focuses on ingredients such as Boswellia, microencapsulated curcumin, ASU and omega compounds to support joint and muscular comfort and the horse’s natural inflammatory-control systems.

HesteFlex provides ingredients commonly associated with the structural maintenance of joints, cartilage and tendons, including glucosamine and chondroitin, alongside antioxidant and plant-derived ingredients.

The best choice will depend on the horse, its workload, the remainder of its diet and the reason supplementation is being considered.

What is the difference between Profix and Profix +BIND?

Profix is suited to broader everyday digestive and gastric nutritional support.

Profix +BIND is a concentrated Professional Range formulation that provides more targeted digestive support and is specifically marketed to help maintain normal stool consistency.

Persistent digestive symptoms should never be managed solely by changing supplements.

Choosing the right Hestevard supplement

Before adding any new equine supplement, consider:

The reason for feeding it

Be clear whether the aim is digestive support, daily dietary balance, muscle condition, joint maintenance or antioxidant support.

The horse’s existing ration

Review forage, grazing, hard feed, balancers and other supplements. This is especially important when using BozMerix Balancer or Dura-E, as vitamins and minerals may already be supplied elsewhere.

Any unexplained symptoms

Pain, lameness, coughing, recurrent digestive disturbance, weight loss or marked changes in performance require veterinary attention.

Competition status

Hestevard publishes competition-compliance information for its products, but regulations and formulations may change.

The manufacturer’s published listing currently identifies Profix, Profix +BIND, BozMerix Balancer, Durizanol and Dura-E as conforming with the listed FEI requirements, while certain Professional Range mobility products carry specified withdrawal guidance.

Competitors must check the most recent manufacturer information and their governing body’s current rules before use.

The rider, trainer or responsible person remains accountable for everything fed to a competition horse.
